Look at our ancestors- the cavemen. With only fire to protect them, they were probably terrified come nightfall, thus creating the need to find somewhere to be safe.
Maybe this survival tactic has carried onto us like the other used to be useful things that we have still. Like wisdom teeth or our pancreases.
That said, they did have some nasty stuff to contend with...
Okay, you've got a point - but in modern times, it's kind of an inconvenience. If a killer's going to kill you, it won't matter whether it's night or day - humans are neither diurnal nor nocturnal...usually.
@ Macey - Yeah, you get the points for this one...maybe I should work in some clause for that, though...
When I was young, it wasn't night or day that affected me, it was just being in the dark and not knowing what was beyond that black veil of containment.
But I see what you mean, though I however do have to say that a view the dark a tad more dangerous because people with a criminal mentality tend to want to capitalize with everybody presumably asleep and all.
